Lon Chaney (1883-1930)


 

  Lon Chaney Sr. (Birth Name: Leonidas Frank Chaney) Born in Colorado Springs, Colorado by his parents Frank H. Chaney and Emma Alice Kennedy. Leonidas grew up with deaf parents but Chaney entered his first stage in 1902 at the age of 19 in a play he cowrote with his brother, in 1905 Chaney met then married 16 year Cleva Creighton and had a child, their only son Lon Chaney Jr. who would pick up his fathers legacy in acting. 

  Lon Chaney's career almost went down after Cleva had a suicide attempt later the couple divorced which left scandal for Chaney by people. After the divorce Chaney later made his first appearance in motion picture which at the time was silent films, Chaney played his first supporting role in Hell Morgan's Girl (1917), but the role that made this man a legend was his role in The Miracle Man (1919). 

  Chaney became a big star during the 20's as he made his legacy becoming an extraordinary make-up artist. With these skills Chaney landed lots of unique characters he was able to make his face disfigured, Chaney didn't just do make up to make his characters in his films he also went to making himself go through physical pain for his roles. Chaney broke vessels as he made put his legs into a harness for a character portrayal of blizzard a legless criminal in the film The Penalty (1920), for his role as The Hunchback in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) Chaney used a 10-15 pound plaster hump to make the hunchback, His role as  Erik in The Phantom of The Opera (1925) was his greatest role as he made his character from a book come life with his amazing make-up, Chaney was given a name in the film industry and by many people he was known as The Man of a Thousand Faces
