The Batman (2022) Trailer 2

Last year 13th of August Matt Reeves dropped the first trailer/teaser for The Batman. And it would be 14 months later that another DC FanDome gave us DC fans the official main trailer, and oh my gosh I’m more excited to see this movie and how it’s played out.

I’ll go over plot details, trailer/character breakdowns and comic connections! I’ll be going over plot details, going over previous trailers to this trailer with breakdowns, talk about comic connections in trailers and plot details and breakdown the characters.

Plot details:

Plot details from IMDB says: “In his second year of fighting crime, Batman uncovers corruption in Gotham City that connects to his own family while facing a serial killer known as The Riddler.”

These plot details intrigue me, as we're definitely given one piece of Batman: The Long Halloween, as the book shows one secret about the Wayne's, particularly Thomas Wayne. In the book we’re shown that Thomas healed Carmine Falcone who was shot and injured during a mob hit, this ended with Thomas leaving his duty as a doctor to do so, yet he didn’t accept anything such as a reward for saving Falcone! We can expect to see a bit of this comic come to play as it’s a confirmed comic inspiration by Reeves himself.

We’re seeing a Batman movie that’s so new, with so much more than your usual Batman film. Reeves Batman has a Batman dealing with more than one challenge- Riddler, corruption and his identity.

This story tells of Batman's early years of being Gotham's protector. In this film's first trailer we can already tell this story tells that a mysterious murderer is wanting to show Batman and Gotham there is no justice and that he’s started a game of riddles for Batman to play, it’s up to the detective to show justice will prevail.

Trailer Breakdowns/ Comic Connections:

In the beginning of the first trailer we're shown Riddler taping up a victim he murdered! Who's actually the mayor of Gotham named Don Mitchell, the evidence in the room found by James Gordon, played by Jeffrey Wright, suggests Don may be a corrupt mayor and working for Moroni, the crime lord of Gotham. This possibly is inspired by Batman: The Long Halloween, the whole story tells that a murder spree is happening in Gotham by a mysterious murderer by the name "Holiday" who's murdering members of the Falcone crime family. As the murders happen from Halloween to a long year of holidays following, it's up to Batman to figure out this case of murders.

Another hint of Batman: The Long Halloween is when we're shown the first time Batman and Catwoman meet. As shot for shot this trailer's sequence matches exactly to the comic strips of The Long Halloween. In this comic we see Catwoman getting into a safe belonging to Carmine "The Roman" Falcone, this ends with Catwoman caught in the act by Batman who says "I was wondering who left the window open". Sounds familiar right? That's because in the trailer we see Catwoman roping down, then cracking open a safe possibly belonging to Falcone. After being caught by Batman the two fight as in the comic and the trailer. This actually might be the case to the fact John Turturro who's playing Falcone has been spotted in public outside, what may be a courthouse, with the other cast during the films production.

A hint of Batman Year One is shown as we also see that there's some corruption in the justice system with commissioner Pete Savage, played by Alex Ferns, possibly showing he's a corrupt commissioner and when we hear Riddler's voice saying "If you are justice, please do not lie" while Batman lashes anger in a room full of cops. We also see a bigger hint at this being a story of Batman's early years since Batman & Catwoman are meeting for the first time?

There also may be hints at the Comic Batman Earth One as the trailer shows that Riddler is leaving riddles and picking city council members. The comic shows that city council members have continued illegal operations made by a dead Oswald Cobblepot and their all killed by The Riddler as he knows these members are dirty and he decides to murder them one by one, he also leaves riddles only for Batman to figure out as The Riddler uses explosives to kill his victims as does the films Riddler seems to use. The trailer also gives a particular hint of this as we hear Riddler say "If you are justice, please do not lie", is he actually talking about how the city's council is dirty making Gotham's law enforcement dirty, saying the city's law is no justice and the cops act like they aren't really clean?

Character Breakdowns:

First off let’s talk about Robert as Batman. I’m sure you and I can agree we were definitely wrong about him as Batman, definitely a great choice for Batman!

Trailer two shows that this Batman is far different than his past versions.

Michael Keatons Batman was dark but had a lighter darkness and weight of pain, Val Kilmer deepened that, while George Clooney was too silly and enjoying being the rich man under the cape! Christian bale was legendary and had pain and anger, his Batman was shown as the real identity as he is in comics. Ben Affleck's Batman was darker than other Batmen and full of violent rage and vengeance!!!

Roberts we see is full of rage and he’s out of control but we’re seeing something new…fear! If you attended DC’s online free event, DCFanDome, which was streamed on YouTube. DC had a 11 minute panel on the main trailer reveal as we’re given a talk with Pattinson, Reeves and Kravitz. They talk about what we’re seeing in each character…but the three talk about what Kravitz calls “the greyer area” as they mention that Batman struggles controlling his rage and his identity!

Another thing I want to go over is the bat suit, the symbol is a very interesting piece of construction as Matt used a comic inspiration, where Bruce dismantled and welded together the gun his parent's killer shot them with. The other part of the suit is the body it's self as Bruce is wearing pieces of police gear with his shoulders, his whole torso are made with tactical gear, his gauntlet's have another comic inspiration- his gauntlet's have pieces that seem to take inspiration to The Court of Owl's Talons as Batman's gauntlet's have those silver looking metal rods, Talon's have a similar pattern to their costumes.

Also who was talking to Bruce at the end of the first trailer? my theory is Batman, upon reading Batman comics I learned Bruce's mind is Batman. Bruce Wayne isn't the real identity, the real identity is Batman! Here we're seeing these two communicate with each other but we can see that Batman is trying to be in control of Bruce.

This is what Blu-ray angel says in his tweet he made from info he got about the screen testing from a friend!

Pattinsons Bruce Wayne doesn’t seem all there as he doesn’t seem like the smiling, rich happy man other actors played him. This one has serious struggles living a rich life and doesn’t seem to care about what he loses!

We’re shown two sequences one where we hear Alfred speaking to Bruce telling him “if this continues, it won’t be long before you have nothing left!” He says this in what seems to be the Batcave which is confirmed and shown to be an old subway terminal. We see another sequence with a possible response from Bruce saying “I don’t care what happens to me”.

Are we seeing a Batman with more pain and negative emotions?

And oh my gosh!!! can we talk about Alfred Pennyworth played by the legendary (Andy Serkis)?

I was just visioning what the guy would look like as Alfred! Matt Reeves and most of all Andy Serkis didn’t disappoint us. It seems to me with his scars and beard we’re seeing another Alfred with a military and M17 background, which is good due to the fact this has been a long frequent background in comics so if this is true then that’s something I’m excited to see again!

To further explain this as best I can we’re seeing a very aware and protective Alfred. Which obviously comes from his background being in the British military, special forces, M15 and M17! We so far know that Alfred is aware of what’s going on with Batman and Riddler, he is very concerned of Bruce as he tells Bruce particularly in this trailer “if this continues, it won’t be long before you have nothing left!”, what I know so far from tweets coming from user Blu-ray angel is that Alfred has a bond with Bruce yet Bruce isn’t ever home and refuses to show up! I also learned that Serkis’ Alfred expects Bruce to attend his meetings but Bruce doesn’t do so. So two things are known at that, one is that Bruce will definitely be giving in to being fully Batman which means just like the comics there never was a Bruce Wayne as it’s known that Bruce is just a lie and not the real identity only just a mask, two we also see that Bruce doesn’t want to be Bruce Wayne being the heir to the Wayne fortune and company.

This trailer also revealed more of penguin. we hear more dialogue and if you listen carefully to me it seems he had an American accent saying “whoa, this guy is crazy!!!”, Here you can clearly hear Collin Farrell's Irish accent saying “whoa take it easy sweetheart” is this just a mistake on Farrell?

I’m honestly excited to see a new penguin one that’s way better and not so campy! I love how this one has scars and has a frightening look. I’m hopeful of what Farrell will do with his Cobblepott!

I’m really liking Reeves Catwoman, played by Zoe Kravitz.

This Catwoman/ Selina Kyle is more like her comic counterpart! Flirty, intelligent and feminine minded, I’m seeing the same Selina that’s independent and strong and playful! I’m excited to see this character treated right and like everyone else in this movie she’s not given a campy treatment!

Let’s talk about the main villain himself! The Riddler played by Paul Dano. Paul Dano proves to be the Riddler everyone wanted and the cinematic world needed, Dano gives a darker tone that Batman Forever couldn't have as he makes Riddler more serious.

Edward Nygma suffers an obsession with riddles due to him having obsessive compulsive disorder, he also makes himself out to be a person with superior intellect making him become the villain The Riddler, though Riddler isn't an arch nemesis like Joker or Bane, Riddler just uses riddles to taunt Batman to see if he can be outsmarted or prove to Batman he is smarter, this ultimately leaves him caught by Batman. Though Riddler doesn't prove to be a dangerous foe to Batman, he does come out as a formidable foe, his motive is possibly proving there is no justice.

Will Matt Reeves give us The Batman we expect? We shall see! Will Pattinson exceed all our expectations? We shall also see!!!

Are you excited for this film? Well Matt Reeves "The Batman" comes to theaters March 4th, 2022!
