Elvis (2022)

Elvis (2022) film review & Summary

Austin Butler takes the shoes of Elvis Presley in this biographic film, Elvis takes audience back to the King of Rock's rise to stardom from a boy dreaming of being a superhero to music legend!

The movie isn't just about Elvis, but, also tells us his relationship with his manager Colonel Tom Parker.

This story is interesting as it's narrated by "the villian of this here story"- Tom Parker, who while in a  hospital after suffering a heart attack takes us to the beginning of him meeting Elvis but he then dramatically narrates his and Elvis' journey in the music business. The whole movie shows us the point of view of Parker by his narration as he not only talks about his relationship with Elvis but also shares personal event's between them.

Baz Luhrmann did really well making this movie, I really loved the way he went about this story! It was a great way to share a legends story Luhrmann did well with his casting choices, taking his time to make such a movie as he obviously didn't want to rush making this movie. But Baz was brilliant he went about this story it's not usual and not like other bio films on singers as it includes narration and a different point of view.

I can only say that I was wanting more, as in more run time, length of story and less of rushing through events. I didn't enjoy that this has small amount of events in Elvis' life and fast forwarded through other events, I hope to see less of this when Baz officially releases his four hour cut!

What I really enjoyed is the amount of production done with this film, the editing, lighting, time setting accuracy.

The lighting of this film was well done! with its shadowing in actors, backgrounds and objects, the lighting is on the same level! Whoever did this whole part of production I enjoyed your work.

The thing I hate is that I and many others lack knowledge of The King, it made it hard to believe if the dramatized parts of this movie were real! You're left to ask "Did that really happen?" at the end of viewing this movie I said to myself "that was really sad" but again what was real and what was not? I don't know cause i'm not obsessed with Elvis to investigate his life.

I'm sure some this movie's events were told to luhrmann by others who knew the man himself and his manager, but it makes it hard for the audience to feel the way I felt after watching this movie.

On the Positive Lisa Marie Presley spoke out her thoughts to the film in her instagram, this is what she said.

Baz Luhrmann had the Idea to make this film in 2014, but, obviously it wasn't green lighted! by 2017 Luhrmann went to Elvis' archives in Graceland and in the 3 years following him and his team went through material and discussed what to cut from the script. Will he add what was cut in his 4 hour version of the film? It surely will fill in a lot more and maybe change the questions of what did and did not happen!

As far as casting, again this part of the movie was well chosen with actors such as Tom Hanks and Austin butler they did their part so well.

Austin Butler was so great playing Elvis, he sounded so much like him and looked like him. Butler did so well singing the songs himself and did the dances so well! I don't know much of Butler's filmography except his roles in Nickelodeon's Original shows (Icarly) and (Zoey 101) but I'm sure everyone who grew up watching these shows didn't expect him to do so well and are being left in surprise and shock.

Tom Hanks you obviously know this man did a great performance, He's played in many biographical films and true event films such as Saving Private Ryan (1998), Catch Me if You Can (2002), Captain Phillips (2013) and Saving Mr.Banks (2013)! It's not a Surprise he'll get himself another award standing next to Luhrmann and Butler.

Baz Luhrmann is one of my favorite directors for his production on The Great Gatsby (2013), he brought those elements done in that film to give us Elvis.

Comment here or on my social media pages your thoughts on Baz Luhrmann's Elvis! Do you want a 4 hour cut cause I sure do.
